Overview of Behind-the-Ear Hearing Aids
Behind-the-Ear (BTE) units offer the most flexibility, adaptability and power of all forms of hearing aid technology. Custom earmolds or earbuds provide you with a comfortable fit for all-day use, while open-fit earpieces help prevent the “plugged up” feeling some users experience.
The receiver, microphones and processing are all housed inside the shell that sits snugly on the ear, transmitting processed sound to the ear canal via acoustic tubing. Easy adjustment, with simple switches to quickly control volume and program settings to better match your surroundings, are simpler than with any other style.
BTE units are also available as miniature versions and come in a variety of colors to enhance wearing discretion.
Special Care/Maintenance
Daily hearing aid cleaning is an essential part of getting the best performance out of your device. Follow the instructions provided by your hearing care professional or the unit manufacturer for best results.
BTE units are among the easiest to clean because earmolds can be removed from the electronics portion and soaked in warm, soapy water once a week. Many BTE instruments are now rechargeable, eliminating battery issues, but even those with batteries tend to last up to seven days.
Frequently Asked Questions About BTE Hearing Aids
Do they have the latest in hearing aid technology?
BTE devices feature the more advanced digital technology, including feedback elimination, background noise reduction, speech preservation and greater performance than any other style of hearing aid.
How do you keep behind the ear hearing aids in place?
One drawback of BTE hearing aids is that they are more apt to fall off. However, there are plenty of clips and other accessories (like wig tape) available for individuals with and without glasses to help keep your device in place.
How long do behind the ear hearing aids last?
Behind-the-Ear hearing aids can last between 3 to 7 years. However, most hearing care experts recommend changing them every five years (depending on performance) in order to keep up with rapid technological changes.
How do BTE hearing aids compare to other devices?
What sets BTE hearing aids apart from other variations is their size, which makes them less discrete, but allows more room for the most powerful processing technology. Even though they are larger, the capacity to produce devices that match your skin tone or hair color, and the fact that they are continuing to become smaller as micro-digital technology progresses can help put you at ease about wearing discretion.
Who should consider BTE hearing aids?
Anyone can wear a behind-the-ear hearing aid thanks to their capacity to provide greater flexibility, adaptability and processing power. Additional features like Bluetooth connectivity are attractive features that some other styles do not offer.
When it comes to selecting the right hearing aid for your specific needs, your hearing care professional will help guide you toward the style and features that provide the best fit for your hearing needs as well as your lifestyle.
